Building within the Town of Tusayan

Applicants planning to build within the Town of Tusayan must submit to the Town and receive Town approval of a completed Pre-Application Checklist before applying for civil or building permit review.

By intergovernmental agreement, Town of Tusayan building permit reviews are done by Coconino County, whose personnel are also authorized to perform inspections on the Town’s behalf. After Coconino County completes its review, the Town issues a final building permit authorizing construction.

No construction may begin until the Town has issued its final signed building permit.

Other Required Permits

Several other agencies have concurrent jurisdiction within the Town of Tusayan. Separate permits may be required from these entities, independent of the Town’s process. These include but are not limited to:

  • Coconino County Flood Control District
  • Tusayan Sanitary District
  • Tusayan Fire District
  • Grand Canyon School District
  • Arizona State Fire Marshall

Fire suppression and inspection services may be obtained through the State Fire Marshall’s office. As a convenience to applicants, the Tusayan Fire District has authorized Willdan Engineering to provide services to applicants on a fee for service basis. Applicants may reach out directly to State Fire Marshall or Willdan Engineering for assistance.

Pre-Application Meetings

Because permitting in the Town of Tusayan involves multiple agencies, the Town strongly encourages all applicants to schedule a pre-application meeting before beginning the permit process. To schedule a pre-application meeting, please email the Tusayan Town Manager.
